President Donald Trump said Monday that Iran has been given what he described as a final opportunity to reach a peace agreement after he stepped back from his latest threat to launch military strikes that he previously said would be unlike anything seen since World War II.
Speaking during an executive order signing in the Oval Office, Trump said discussions with Iran are currently underway despite public claims from Iranian leaders denying that negotiations are taking place.
“We’ve done a great job,” Trump said. “But when we talk, we say we’re talking. If we’re not talking. When you ask me, ‘No, we’re not talking,’ I’ll say it. But we are talking, right now, we’re talking, and we’re talking at the request of Iran backed by Saudi Arabia. Backed by the UAE, and backed by Qatar, in particular.”
Trump added that other nations have also encouraged the negotiations to continue.
“But others also,” he said. “Many countries called. Many, the leaders of many — I’m friendly with a lot of them, almost all of them, one way or the another — and they all wanted to give this a last chance.”
The president emphasized that he believes the current discussions represent Iran’s final opportunity to reach an agreement.
“This is the last chance; this is not something that, if it doesn’t happen — this is a last chance for them to sign a good document,” Trump said.
Later, when speaking with reporters, Trump reiterated that Iran is facing what he described as its “last chance” to make a deal before “decapitation.”
Earlier in the day, Trump took to Truth Social to accuse Iran’s leadership of publicly denying negotiations while privately seeking discussions with the United States.
“Iranian Leadership is unbelievably duplicitous!” Trump wrote.
According to the president, Iranian officials requested a meeting and additional talks have already begun, with more discussions planned in the near future. Trump claimed that despite those developments, Iranian leaders continue to insist publicly that no negotiations are taking place and that they are dealing only with Oman.
Trump also criticized Iranian statements regarding the Strait of Hormuz, rejecting claims that Iran controls the vital waterway.
Instead, Trump asserted that the United States Navy already maintains control through what he referred to as America’s “Blockade,” adding that some call it “The United States Wall of Steel!”
“Nothing gets through to Iran, unless we want it to, and nothing will get through, unless a Deal, or Total Surrender, is accomplished,” Trump wrote.
The president also maintained that, regardless of Iran’s public statements, negotiations are taking place to resolve what he described as a longstanding problem.
“Whether Iran wants to admit it or not, we are, in fact, talking of a solution to a problem that they have caused, for decades,” Trump wrote.
Trump concluded his message by reiterating his longstanding position on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, declaring, “It is very simple, IRAN WILL NEVER HAVE A NUCLEAR WEAPON!”
