The local governor’s office confirmed the news, stating that there were no remaining passengers or crew unaccounted for.
The submarine, named “SINDBAD,” was carrying 45 Russian tourists along with crew members when it sank on Thursday.
According to the Russian consulate in Hurghada, most of the rescued passengers were quickly taken to nearby hotels or hospitals. Reports indicated that 14 individuals were hospitalized, while others returned safely.
Among the deceased were five Russians, including two children. The identity of the sixth victim remains unknown as Russian and Egyptian officials investigate the cause of the sinking.
The submarine was designed to allow passengers to admire the Red Sea’s stunning corals and marine life, capable of diving to depths of 25 meters.
This incident happens amid ongoing concerns about safety in Egypt’s burgeoning tourism sector, which plays a vital role in the nation’s economy, especially for Russian visitors who frequent the region.
Egyptian authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the sinking, interviewing crew members to ascertain the reasons behind the tragedy.
Governor Amr Hanafy emphasized that both the vessel and its captain were licensed for operation.
In recent months, Egypt has seen several incidents involving tourist boats, including capsizing due to high waves.
This disaster has raised alarms about maritime safety in the area, where tourism is a crucial economic driver.
As Egypt strives to improve safety measures, the tragic loss of life in this accident highlights ongoing vulnerabilities within the resort tourism industry at the Red Sea.
