A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 reportedly struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday causing widespread devastation and leaving more than 150 people dead.

The epicenter was located about 10 miles from Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city, which houses a population of around 1.5 million. The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed that strong aftershocks followed, including one measured at 6.4 magnitude.

Myanmar’s military government leader, Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing, reported that at least 144 individuals were killed and 730 injured in Myanmar alone.

In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, officials confirmed the deaths of at least 10 people, with more than a dozen injured and around 100 individuals missing.

The death toll is anticipated to rise as rescue efforts continue.

Rescue teams rushed to a 33-story high-rise building under construction in Bangkok that collapsed during the quake. Dramatic footage captured the moment the structure fell, and many people took to the streets in panic as buildings swayed.

Traffic came to a halt in central Bangkok as aftershocks disrupted the rail system.

Images from Mandalay displayed extensive destruction, with several buildings toppled and rescue crews diligently working to pull victims from the rubble.

In Naypyitaw, the country’s capital, damaged roads were inspected by military leader Min Aung Hlaing as emergency response teams continued their efforts.

As the region grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake, both nations are focused on rescue and relief efforts, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced in the wake of such a significant natural disaster.

Heartbreaking photos and videos show the extent of the ruins, painting a stark picture of the impact on communities in both Myanmar and Thailand.
