The Canadian government has now reportedly launched a billboard campaign in the United States to counter President Donald Trump’s tariffs, which are set to have significant economic implications.

This initiative involves billboards placed in a dozen states and Washington, D.C., prominently featuring the message: “Tariffs are a tax.”

The campaign was initiated following Trump’s February announcement threatening Canada and Mexico with a 25% tariff on goods.

John Babcock, a spokesperson for Global Affairs Canada, stated that the billboards aim to educate Americans on how tariffs can raise costs for everyday essentials such as fuel and groceries.

He emphasized that tariffs essentially act as a tax burden on hardworking Americans.

In recent developments, Trump implemented sweeping 25% tariffs on Canadian goods, though some products, particularly energy, face a reduced 10% tariff. I

n a subsequent announcement, Trump introduced additional tariffs against numerous countries during a event dubbed “Liberation Day.”

These tariffs were calculated using a formula involving each country’s trade deficit with the U.S. divided by its exports. Trump has claimed that American taxpayers have been “ripped off” for decades and vowed to rectify this imbalance.

Following the announcement of new tariffs, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney’s office issued a statement condemning the U.S. administration’s actions, calling them “unwarranted and unjustified.”

The statement noted that while some aspects of U.S.-Canada trade relations have been preserved, newly imposed tariffs on automobiles and other goods would disrupt the trading system.

Carney’s office reiterated Canada’s commitment to resisting these tariffs and emphasized that the impacts would be felt by both Canadian and American workers.

Canada aims to protect its workforce while striving to maintain a robust economy amidst these escalating trade tensions.
