As part of the process of moving away from the regime of Bashar al-Assad, the Islamist commander of the Syrian rebels, Ahmed al-Sharaa, has now reportedly declared himself president, invalidated the constitution, and abolished the national army as well as all opposition parties and armed groups, including his own.

Sharaa was the leader of Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a terrorist organization designated by the United States that spearheaded the rapid takeover of Syria last month.

This event marked the beginning of a new alignment in the Middle East and brought an end to 54 years of dominance by the Assad family.

He has been advocating for the removal of economic sanctions that were imposed on Syria by the United States of America, Europe, and the United Nations during the time that Assad was in power.

After taking control of Damascus, the rebels enacted a sweeping amnesty for army conscripts, requested that the police remain on duty, and forced previous officials to identify themselves to the new authorities in exchange for safe treatment.

All of these actions were taken in response to the rebels’ successful victory.

The previous month, Sharaa stated that the process of drafting a new constitution may take up to three months, and that it could take up to four years to hold elections.

An earlier gathering of representatives from Syria’s many communities, which was supposed to begin earlier this month but has been postponed, was supposed to begin with the purpose of discussing the transition.

Sharaa conducted a conference with Syrian military factions and revolutionary figures behind closed doors, which resulted in the most recent proclamations being made.

During the transitional period that is now underway until a new constitution is put into force, Sharaa will be responsible for the reconstruction of the national army and security apparatus, as well as the formation of a temporary legislative council, according to a statement that was released on official media.
