Vice President JD Vance has now reportedly stated that Europe must cease being America’s “permanent security vassal,” criticizing European leaders for neglecting the needs and desires of their citizens regarding immigration and security.
In an interview with the British website UnHerd, Vance emphasized that the United States has subsidized Europe’s security for decades, pointing out that many European nations, with the exception of a few like Britain, France, and Poland, lack sufficient military capabilities.
He argued that European leaders have significantly underinvested in their defense, stating, “It’s not good for Europe to be the permanent security vassal of the United States.”
Vance’s comments reflect a broader sentiment within the Trump administration, which has consistently urged European nations to increase their defense spending, particularly in light of the ongoing geopolitical tensions following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Currently, only a small number of NATO countries meet the alliance’s defense spending target of 2% of GDP, although this number has risen since the conflict began.
Vance also expressed frustration with European migration policies, which he believes contradict the preferences of their populations.
He noted that many European citizens are calling for more rational economic and migration policies, yet their leaders seem to ignore these demands.
Despite his criticisms, Vance expressed admiration for European culture, highlighting the deep connections between American and European values.
He stressed that while the U.S. views Europe as an ally, this relationship should be reciprocal, particularly in trade.
The vice president concluded by reiterating the administration’s commitment to prioritizing American interests in foreign policy, emphasizing, “We’re not on anybody’s side; we’re on America’s side.”
