The US Government is rolling out plans to build a pier in Gaza to distribute additional aid to the affected civilians. This move is intended to appease Biden’s radical Left allies, but could also have terrible repercussions in the region.
Following some aid being airdropped bye the Air Force, the Pentagon now wants to use the U.S. Army’s Transportation units to build artificial piers so it can ferry aid. The concept would be similar to WWII’s Mulberry Harbors used during D-Day. Politico reports:
During his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden will order the U.S. military to establish a temporary port in Gaza so more humanitarian aid can get to Palestinians in need, three senior administration officials said Thursday.
The U.S. military has “unique capabilities” that allow it to construct a port or causeway without having to send forces to Gaza’s shores, said one of the officials. “We’re not planning for this to be an operation that would require U.S. boots on the ground,” said a second one. All were granted anonymity to preview the president’s announcement.
The problem with this plan is that it will put US troops either in Gaza itself, or on its coast. Soldiers will have to provide security for the distribution of aid, or collaborate with whatever is left of Hamas’ civil authorities to distribute. ABC News continues:
The senior White House official said “there’s no hard and fast, like, deadline on this negotiation” when asked about reaching a deal before Ramadan.
”But obviously, we recognize that extremists could try to use Ramadan to spark something that would be deeply unfortunate in that holy month and we want to make sure that we have a peaceful period so people can worship and obviously we’re working that through with the Israelis with the Palestinian Authority, with the Jordanians and others,” the White House official said.
Ramadan, which starts Monday, could complicate any deal being negotiated. A pier in Gaza could create mission creep, getting America more involved over time. There is also little evidence that Palestinians want Americans there, and this whole operation could turn into Lebanon in the 1980s.
