Brazilian federal police have reportedly accused former President Jair Bolsonaro and 36 of his allies of devising a coup to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming office in 2023.

The plot allegedly included the assassination of the leftist leader.

The police have claimed that Bolsonaro and the other individuals, who were primarily political aides and military figures, established a highly organized criminal organization in order to maintain his position as the right-wing leader in government, despite his defeat in the October 2022 presidential election to da Silva.

Before the prosecutor general determines whether to proceed with the formal filing of charges against Bolsonaro and the other individuals identified in the investigation, the police have announced that they will submit their most recent discoveries to the Brazilian Supreme Court.

Police apprehended five individuals, including a former member of Bolsonaro’s administration, earlier this week in connection with an alleged plot to assassinate da Silva days prior to his assumption of office.

The Brazilian media reported that the police discovered evidence indicating that Bolsonaro was fully aware of the plot to assassinate da Silva and his Vice President, Geraldo Alckmin. Police declined to provide any commentary.

Bolsonaro has denied involvement in any wrongdoing, asserting that he is the victim of a witch hunt by the leftist government of da Silva and the country’s judges in an effort to prevent him from competing again in the 2026 presidential elections.

Although Brazil’s electoral court has prohibited Bolsonaro from seeking public office again until 2030, his supporters have pledged to overturn the ruling with the assistance of the right-leaning Congress.

As the election of Donald Trump in the United States, a close friend of Bolsonaro and an idol to many of his supporters, has encouraged conservatives about the potential for a comeback by the right in Latin America’s largest country, the accusations have been leveled.

According to political analysts, it has also exacerbated the far left’s apprehensions regarding the necessity of holding Bolsonaro and his allies accountable for what they perceive as offenses against democracy.

Bolsonaro and his supporters have been subjected to a constant bombardment of legal measures since thousands of them invaded the presidential palace, Congress, and the Supreme Court on January 8, 2023, one week after da Silva assumed office.

The attacks have prompted extensive investigations by Brazil’s Supreme Court, which is primarily headed by Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

In addition, in the name of preserving democracy and globalism, Justice de Moraes has ordered the arrest of over a thousand individuals, mostly antigovernment rioters.
