President Donald Trump announced Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a limited, three-day ceasefire set to begin May 9, offering what he described as a potential step toward winding down one of the world’s most prolonged and destructive conflicts.
In a statement posted on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would pause “all kinetic activity” between the two nations from May 9 through May 11. The temporary halt in fighting coincides with Russia’s Victory Day celebrations, a major national observance marking the end of World War II, while also acknowledging Ukraine’s role in that historic conflict.
According to the president, the ceasefire will include not only a suspension of hostilities but also a large-scale prisoner exchange. Both sides have agreed to swap 1,000 prisoners each, a move that could provide relief to families and signal a rare moment of cooperation between the two warring countries.
Trump said the ceasefire came at his direct request and credited both Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for agreeing to the terms. The announcement highlights a coordinated effort, at least temporarily, to ease tensions in a war that has dragged on with heavy costs and no clear end in sight.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE DAY CEASEFIRE,” Trump wrote, expressing optimism that the development could mark the beginning of a broader resolution. He described the conflict as “a very long, deadly, and hard fought war,” underscoring the toll it has taken over time.
The president also noted that negotiations to end the war entirely are ongoing, characterizing the conflict as the largest since World War II. While no comprehensive agreement has yet been reached, Trump suggested that progress is being made behind the scenes, saying talks are moving “closer and closer every day.”
The announcement, while limited in scope, carries symbolic weight. Temporary ceasefires have often served as openings for further dialogue, though they can also prove fragile in the face of deep-rooted tensions. For now, the three-day pause offers a brief window where fighting is expected to stop and humanitarian steps, such as the prisoner exchange, can move forward.
