British families are suddenly being told to stock up on emergency supplies and prepare for the possibility of war.

Wes Streeting, the United Kingdom’s defense secretary, launched a media blitz to promote a new “Be Ready” campaign aimed at boosting Brits’ preparedness for a range of crises. According to Streeting, those crises could include floods and wildfires, terrorism and cyber attacks, and ultimately even war.

“There’s no sugarcoating the fact that we do live in a more dangerous and turbulent world,” Streeting told BBC’s “Newsnight.”

Streeting said the campaign is meant to encourage households to keep basic necessities on hand in case of a disruption.

“It’s about saying to households across the country to be ready by just having some everyday essentials indoors should there be disruption from these sorts of events,” he said.

The senior cabinet member laid out a list of emergency essentials families should keep in their homes. Those include canned food, diapers, pet supplies, flashlights, batteries and backup cellphone charging packs.

Streeting also urged households to keep “enough cash indoors if the local payment systems were down.”

While the defense secretary said the “Be Ready” campaign applies to any emergency, including natural disasters, the push came at the same time he issued ominous warnings that the European nation must prepare for war. He suggested such a conflict could be likely within a few years.

In a piece written for the Telegraph, Streeting argued that the danger posed by Britain’s adversaries has grown significantly.

“Our adversaries’ willingness to harm us is not new. What has changed is their capacity,” he wrote.

Streeting then laid out a stark timeline for the threat.

“By 2030, their force strength and war economy could put them in a position to attack. That gives us a little over 1,000 days to complete our mission: to be ready with our allies to fight and win. To prevent the worst, we have to prepare for it,” he wrote.

The defense secretary made clear the danger facing the UK goes beyond a traditional military invasion. He warned that the threat is not limited to “Russian tanks rolling across [its] borders.”

“It is also the growing threat of state-sponsored terrorism, sabotage and hostile acts designed to disrupt our lives, undermine our security and spread fear in our communities,” Streeting said.

The message represents a striking shift in tone for the British government, with a top official openly urging citizens to get ready for disruption at home while simultaneously warning of a potential war on the horizon.

Streeting’s comments frame the campaign as both a practical step for everyday emergencies and part of a broader effort to prepare the country for more serious threats. From stocking canned goods and batteries to keeping cash on hand in case payment systems go down, the guidance is aimed squarely at ordinary households.

At the same time, his warning that adversaries could be in a position to attack by 2030 puts a clear deadline on the government’s preparations.

For British families, the message from the defense secretary is blunt: the world has become more dangerous, and the time to prepare is now.
