A former Marine General, Frank McKenzie, is sounding the alarm about potential new ISIS attacks. Following the deadly shooting in Moscow by ISIS-Khorasan (Afghanistan), their next target could be somewhere in America.
Since the withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan in August 2021, ISIS-K has slowly been growing its strength, attacking Western and Christian states to build legitimacy in Afghanistan. ISIS-K was the organization responsible for the death of 13 Marines during the evacuation. The Hill says:
ISIS-K, the Central Asian offshoot of the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group that carried out the deadly Moscow concert hall attack last month, badly wants to target the United States, two former U.S. Central Command leaders are warning.
Retired Gen. Frank McKenzie, former CENTCOM head, said Sunday that the group has a “strong desire” to attack the U.S. and Biden administration officials should “believe them when they say that.”
The lack of US forces and intelligence in Afghanistan has been a problem in the fight against ISIS. However, with proper surveillance of suspected terrorists in America and a strong border, the threat of ISIS could be seriously reduced. Fox News continues:
“If you can keep pressure on them … in their homeland and their base, it makes it hard for them to conduct these types of attacks,” he said. “Unfortunately, we no longer place that pressure on them, so they’re free to gain strength, they’re free to plan, they’re free to coordinate.”
McKenzie said he believes “things would be different” and “we might actually be safer than we are” if the U.S. and its allies kept a small presence in Afghanistan, prolonging military involvement in the region.
An unorthodox strategy would be for the United States to team up with its old enemy, the Taliban, to work together and eliminate the rising ISIS-K threat. Another invasion of Afghanistan is most certainly out of the question, as the American people have spoken in favor of it even if its execution and timing was botched.
