President Biden has reportedly prolonged temporary deportation protections for approximately 900,000 individuals from nations such as Venezuela and Ukraine, aiming to safeguard certain immigrants prior to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Biden on Friday prolonged safeguards under Temporary Protected Status for nationals of El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela, safeguarding them from deportation during the initial 18 months of the Trump administration.

The protections permit individuals to work legally until their expiration.

All individuals benefiting from Biden’s initiative had been enrolled in the program for a minimum of two years prior.

The legislation regulating TPS permits the president to declare a country as unsafe for repatriation because to armed conflicts or natural catastrophes, for example.

Citizens of specified nations are permitted to reside in the U.S. for renewable periods of 18 months. Approximately 200,000 individuals from El Salvador have maintained continuous protection under the program since 2001, subsequent to the civil violence in that country.

Biden granted asylum to around 600,000 Venezuelans who escaped an authoritarian rule and economic disintegration.

Trump has stated he will cease the renewal of the majority of TPS protections, which he claims have been applied excessively to save immigrants who entered the country unlawfully.

He attempted to terminate safeguards for nationals from nations such as El Salvador during his initial administration. The courts impeded him until the administration’s concluding months. He did not revoke protections prior to his departure from office.

Following his inauguration this month, Trump will possess a robust legal basis to terminate safeguards upon their expiration. In the wake of Biden’s action on Friday, a new series of rolling expiration dates will commence in around 18 months.

Extending TPS was one of the limited measures available to Biden to protect immigrants from Trump’s extensive deportation strategies.

Certain advisers believed that protecting a substantial number of immigrants from deportation would contravene the public sentiment demonstrated in Trump’s campaign triumph.

However, advisors contended that individuals from nations such as Ukraine and Venezuela cannot return home safely.
