President Donald Trump sparred with ABC News White House correspondent Mary Bruce during a tense exchange in the Oval Office on Tuesday after she questioned the administration’s strategy in the ongoing war with Iran.
The back-and-forth unfolded during a press conference as Bruce pressed the president on whether there was any indication that Iran was prepared to end the conflict.
“Mr. President, there are no signs that Iran is ready to stop fighting, so what is the plan?” Bruce asked. “Is the plan to just keep fighting until they give up?”
Trump immediately challenged the premise of the question, questioning how Bruce could know what discussions were taking place behind the scenes.
“How would you know there are no signs?” Trump responded. “Why, do you know something that I don’t know?”
Bruce began to answer by pointing to Iran’s continued attacks.
“Well, they continue to attack our allies and kill Americans—” she said before Trump interrupted.
“You don’t know what the dialogue is behind the scenes,” the president replied. “They want to meet desperately to try and end it, because they’re getting decimated.”
Trump also criticized ABC News during the exchange, telling Bruce that her reporting did not reflect what was happening privately.
“You don’t get that when you’re listening to your fake station,” Trump said. “But you don’t know anything.”
As Bruce attempted to ask whether negotiations were actively underway, Trump continued questioning her.
“You know something I don’t know?” he asked repeatedly. “Do you know something I don’t know?”
Bruce answered by asking the president to explain what he was referring to.
“Well tell us,” she said.
Trump responded that Iran was eager to hold talks but insisted the United States would not engage until those discussions could produce meaningful results.
“I will tell you they want to desperately meet,” Trump said. “And until they are ready to meet in a meaningful way, we have no interest.”
The contentious exchange marked another public confrontation between Trump and Bruce. Last year, the president referred to the ABC correspondent as a “terrible person” after she questioned him about Jeffrey Epstein and his family’s business dealings in Saudi Arabia.
Tuesday’s exchange came as the conflict with Iran continues to intensify following a deadly Iranian attack on a military base in Jordan over the weekend.
The strike killed two American soldiers, prompting additional U.S. military action. By Monday, the United States had carried out military strikes against Iran for a tenth consecutive day.
Later during Tuesday’s press conference, Trump addressed the attack in Jordan, acknowledging that Iran had managed to penetrate U.S. defenses in that instance.
“They did slip something through,” the president said, referring to the strike.
Despite the ongoing fighting, Trump maintained that the United States remains focused on its broader objective in the conflict.
The president reiterated that his administration’s goal is to ensure Iran never acquires a nuclear weapon, a position he has repeatedly emphasized throughout the conflict.
The Oval Office exchange underscored the administration’s insistence that diplomatic discussions may still be taking place behind closed doors, even as military operations continue. Trump dismissed Bruce’s suggestion that there were no indications Iran was seeking an end to the fighting, arguing that reporters lack access to the private negotiations unfolding outside public view.
