Populist Leader Under Investigation

The former President of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, is under governmental investigation for his supporters’ January 8, 2023 protest against the election results of 2022.

Bolsonaro made waves with his 2017 election, when he ran on restoring law and order in a crime-ridden Brazil. His political enemies have now taken back control of the government and are intent on punishing him. The NY Times says:

Former President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil oversaw a broad conspiracy to hold on to power regardless of the results of the 2022 election, including personally editing a proposed order to arrest a Supreme Court justice, according to accusations unveiled on Thursday by the Brazilian federal police.

Mr. Bolsonaro and dozens of top aides, ministers and military leaders worked together to undermine the Brazilian public’s faith in the election and set the stage for a potential coup, the federal police said.

The Brazilian police is also working on rooting out his supporters within the intelligence agency, allegedly due to their own political surveillance at the time. Fox News continues:

Previously issued police statements and Supreme Court documents showed police were investigating an “organized crime” group that operated within the intelligence agency during Bolsonaro’s administration and that allegedly used the agency’s tools and services for political use and personal gain.

Police claimed they identified a group that allegedly included Carlos Bolsonaro, which “monitored ‘political enemies’,” according to Supreme Court documents. The group was also suspected of seeking to interfere with ongoing police investigations, some of which targeted or involved two other sons of Bolsonaro, Jair Renan and Flávio Bolsonaro, a sitting senator.

The United States is now looking more and more like Brazil, where a veneer of democracy is used to purge the other sides’s supporters every election cycle.
